Scots sweep No. 16 St. Olaf; Take over top spot in MIAC standings

Macalester vs. St. Olaf box scores: Game 1 | Game 2

Senior starters Alex Ingram (Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School) and Eric Robinson (San Francisco, Calif. / The Urban School) pitched complete game wins, yielding just three runs in the twinbill, as Macalester swept St. Olaf 8-3 and 4-0 in St. Paul to take over first place in the MIAC standings. The Mac aces are now both 4-0 on the season.  The Oles came in 17-4 and ranked No. 16 in the most recent D3baseball.com national poll.

Winners of eight of their last 10 games, the Scots (13-9 overall) are 5-1 in the early-season standings. Their two defeats over their past 10 games both came by just a single run. The Scots are percentage points ahead of Hamline (6-2). The Oles, who came in on top of the standings, drop to 17-5 overall and 5-3 in the MIAC.

In the first contest, Macalester scored two runs in the third inning and St. Olaf matched that with a pair in the top of the fourth. Mac's third-inning tallies came on a two-run Will Chen (Sr., Edina, Minn.) homer. Chen went 3-for-4 on the game

Macalester put the game away with three-run frames in both the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Jimmy Belfont (So., Olney, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel) went to left field for a three-run homer, his first career round-tripper. One-out doubles by Chen and Mitch Glasser (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School) got things started in Macalester's three-run fifth.

Ingram left eight Ole baserunners stranded and fanned seven batters against just one walk. Ingram is 4-0 with a 2.73 ERA.

The Scots won the nightcap with just three hits as Robinson shut the door on the Oles. St. Olaf left 10 runners on base, compared to just one for Macalester. Robinson didn't walk a batter and struck out five to register the shutout.

Mac is off until Saturday (April 16) when it travels to Moorhead to take on Concordia.
