Complete Macalester vs. Concordia and St. Thomas results
After weeks of pre-season training, the Scots opened their season with an MIAC double-dual meet in Moorhead against Concordia and St. Thomas. Macalester defeated Concordia 65-48, but were out-scored by the Tommies 77-36.
Macalester had winning performances against both teams turned in by
Clare Pillsbury (Sr., Baraboo, Wis.),
Grace Fleming (Sr., Northampton, Mass.) and
Karoline Hart (Sr., Rexford, N.Y. / Niskayuna). Pillsbury reached the wall first twice, placing first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:33.59) and 100-yard backstroke (1:07.87). Fleming won the 200 freestyle (2:04.32) and Hart took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.31).
Pillsbury edged teammate
Alese Halvorson (Fy., Maple Grove, Minn. / Wayzata) by 0.06 in the 200 IM (2:23.59 to Halvorson's 2:23.65), and Halvorson was also second in the 100 fly (1:05.37). Fleming added a second-place swim in the 100 free (57.50) and Hart was runner-up in the 1000-yard free (11:32.69).
In the 200-yard medley relay, the Scots turned in a 2:00.55 time. Relay team members were Pillsbury, Hart, Halvorson and Fleming.
On Tuesday (Nov. 8), the Scots and other Twin Cities MIAC teams will participate in the fifth annual Ted Mullen “Leave it in the Pool” Hour of Power Relay in the name of cancer research at Mac's Riley Pool. The event is in honor of former Carleton College student and athlete Edward H. “Ted” Mullin, who passed away from sarcoma, a rare soft-tissue cancer, in 2006.
The team's next competitive meet is Friday, Nov. 18 against St. Mary's at the Riley Pool at 6 p.m.
