A pair of second half scores gave Macalester a 2-0 win over visiting Gustavus Adolphus as the Scots clinch a berth in the four-team MIAC playoffs for the eighth time in the nine-year history of the league post-season tourney.
As the No. 4 seed, Macalester plays a semi-final match Tuesday (Nov. 1) against No. 1 St. Benedict in St. Joseph at 2 p.m. The Scots edged the Blazers 1-0 at CSB in mid-September. The other semi-final contest Tuesday has No. 3 Concordia facing No. 2 Carleton in Northfield. The MIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs will be on the line Saturday (Nov. 5) in the MIAC championship match.
Maggie Molter (So., Cedarburg, Wis.) netted her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 48th minute and
Georgia Cloepfil (So., Portland, Ore. / Lincoln) scored her fourth in the final minute to account for Macalester's goals. Cloepfil assisted on Mac's first goal and
Izzi Speer (So., Madison, Wis. / West) set up the second with her eighth assist of the year.
The Scots had all nine of the game's shots on goal and had a 19-3 lead in total shots.
Macalester registered its 12th shutout in 18 games. Mac's defense has been outstanding all season. The Scots have won eight 1-0 games and the team's goals against average is 0.60.
The Scots close out the regular-season at 11-6-1 overall and 7-3-1 in the MIAC. If they win two conference playoff matches, they'll make it to the NCAA championships for the 16th time.
