Scots tie Gustavus but lose playoff tiebreaker

Macalester vs. Gustavus statistics

Macalester took on once-beaten Gustavus Saturday in St. Peter and battled the Gusties to a 1-1 double overtime tie, but missed out on an MIAC playoff spot as Augsburg toppled St. Mary's later in the day to tie the Scots for fourth place and win the No. 4 seed on a tiebreaker.

The Scots close out another very good season at 10-7-1 overall and 6-3-1 in MIAC play.  Mac finishes at .500 or better for the 25th year in a row.

Macalester played well throughout against the 14-1-3 Gusties, out-shooting the home side 21-12 and 8-5 in tries on net.  The Scots had a 6-4 corner kick advantage.  Goalkeeper Matt Weyer (Sr., Cedarburg, Wis.) recorded four saves.

Gustavus got on the board first at 80:17, but the Scots were not discouraged, responding with a Chris Kartheiser (So., Shorewood, Wis.) goal at 80:52 off a goalkeeper deflection.  His fourth tally of the year was followed by 30 minutes of scoreless play.  The Gustie keeper made a pair of saves in overtime.

With the tie, Macalester denied the Gusties the MIAC championship.  Gustavus finished one point short of co-champs Carleton and St. Olaf.
