Macalester vs. St. Mary's statistics |
MIAC standings
Taylor Rasmussen (Jr., Eagan, Minn. / Eastview) headed in a corner kick off the foot of
Robin Forslund (So., Madison, Wis. / Memorial) in the 105th minute as Macalester got past St. Mary's 1-0 in double overtime in Winona. The Scots go to 6-3 in the MIAC in this must-win match and are still alive in the race for a spot in the four-team post-season league playoffs.
The MIAC goal-scoring champ last year and the leader this year so far with eight in nine games, Rasmussen headed in his 14th of the season, becoming just the fourth player in the program's history to net 14 or more in a season.
Macalester goes to 10-7 overall and plays its final regular-season match Saturday (Oct. 29) at Gustavus Adolphus. If the Scots win, they will secure one of four spots in the MIAC playoffs. It certainly won't be easy, however, as the Gusties have been defeated just once all season (14-1-2) and may themselves need a tie to get in. Gustavus could also be going for a conference title.
The Scots out-shot St. Mary's 37-11 and owned a commanding 18-2 advantage in corner kicks, finally scoring on the final one. Macalester had a 15-6 lead in shots on goal, and received six saves from goalkeeper
Jansen Smith (Sr., La Crosse, Wis. / Central).
Rasmussen accounted for six of his team's 15 shots on net, while adding a pair each were
Reid Usedom (Sr., Asheville, N.C. / A.C. Reynolds),
Will Mackaman (So., Des Moines, Ia. / Roosevelt) and
Anthony Calderon (So., St. Paul, Minn. / Cretin-Derham Hall).
With its 10th victory, Macalester has reached double-digits in the win column for the third straight season.
