Macalester rolls past Cornell 4-0

Macalester vs. Cornell statistics

Macalester's 15th-ranked men's soccer team launched 14 shots on net, scoring a pair of goals in each half to cruise past visiting Cornell (Ia.) 4-0 on a rainy night in St. Paul. With their 11th consecutive victory on their home pitch (six straight wins at home to finish the '09 season and five in a row this year), the Scots improve to 7-1-1 overall.

The Scots dominated for a 33-2 lead in total shots and 15-3 corner kick margin, and received a couple first half goals from Stephen Murphy-Logue (Sr., Anchorage, Ak. / West), who got the scoring started with a header off a corner kick from Jesse Geary (Jr., Duluth, Minn. / Marshall) in the 37th minute. Murphy-Logue converted a penalty kick a couple minutes later for his team-leading fifth goal of the year.

Chris Kartheiser (Fy., Shorewood, Wis.) recorded his fourth goal of the year early in the second half on a Reid Usedom (Jr., Ashville, N.C. / A.C. Reynolds) assist and the team's final score came in the 54th minute when Ryan Marshall (Jr., Plymouth, Minn. / Robbinsdale Armstrong) put away a pass from Erik Johnson (Sr., Bethesda, Md. / Landon).  Johnson leads the team with three assists.

With their fourth shutout in nine matches, the Scots lower their collective goals against average to 0.74.  Mac's four goals came over an 18-minute stretch.

Over the past 17 games over the last two seasons, including post-season play, Macalester is 14-2-1.

Macalester, rated second in the North Region, take on the region's fourth-ranked team in Augsburg, in a key MIAC battle Saturday night (Sept. 25) in Minneapolis. That begins a stretch of nine straight MIAC matches to close out the regular season. After playing at Augsburg, the team's next four matches are at home.
