Macalester came back from a halftime deficit, getting a penalty kick from
Stephen Murphy-Logue (Sr., Anchorage, Ak. / West) and receiving the game-winner from in close by
Chris Kartheiser (Fy., Shorewood, Wis.) in the 86th minute to beat visiting Nebraska Wesleyan 2-1. Kartheiser's winning goal was set up by a header pass from
Taylor Rasmussen.(So., Eastview, Minn. / Eagan) The No. 7-ranked Scots move up to 4-0 on the season. NWU drops to 0-3.
The Scots took 17 corner kicks, compared to one for the Prairie Wolves.
Nebraska Wesleyan struck the first blow, converting on a defensive lapse at 17:08, and took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break. Macalester finished the game with a 26-10 lead in shots, 11-7 lead in shots on goal and big 17-1 advantage in corner kicks, and got back into the contest when
Robin Forslund (Fy., Madison, Wis. / Memorial) was fouled in the penalty area in the 62nd minute. Murphy-Logue converted his second penalty kick of the year to deadlock the score.
Rasmussen headed a pass to Kartheiser, who beat the keeper to the lower left corner for the game-winner in the 86th minute to avoid overtime.
Murphy-Logue and Rasmussen each had three shots on goal for the match. Goalkeeper
Mark Mullaney (Sr., Plymouth, Minn. / Robbinsdale Armstrong) turned away four shots on net.
Macalester goes for its fifth straight win Sunday (Sept. 12) when it plays at Minnesota-Morris. The Scots are 4-0 for the first time since 1998, when they started off 7-0. The MIAC season opens Wednesday (Sept. 15) when the Scots host Concordia-Moorhead.
