Game 2
James Murrey (Sr., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) tied the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) all-time record for career wins with 28, while also setting the school single-season win mark with nine, as Macalester won the first game in an MIAC doubleheader Sunday at St. Mary's.
After taking game one 5-0, the Scots completed the sweep with a 9-2 win in the nightcap to wrap up the season at 22-17-1 overall and 8-12 in the MIAC.
Just 24 hours after Matt Schuld of St. Thomas passed Murrey to become the first MIAC hurler ever to post 28 career wins, the Macalester ace got a share of the record back by surrendering just three hits in a complete game 5-0 victory. Murrey fanned nine batters and walked just three, and concludes his final Macalester season with a 9-4 record and 2.99 ERA, and a school-record 110 strikeouts.
Murrey pitched 250 1/3 innings in his Mac career, going 28-13 with a 2.55 ERA. He recorded 308 strikeouts against just 84 walks. He came into the final week of the season ranked second in the nation in strikeouts.
The game's five runs all came in the top of the second inning, when Macalester brought 10 batters up to the plate, and picked up RBIs from
Mitch Glasser (So., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School),
Nate Wilson-Traisman (Sr., Eugene, Ore. / South Eugene),
Bobby De Meulenaere (Jr., Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove) and
Nathan Rubin (So., Venice, Fla.). De Meulenaere went 3-for-4, while Glasser and
Graham Brown (So., Annandale, Minn.) collected two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, the final game of the season for both teams, the Scots plated seven runs in the third inning, more than enough for pitcher
Alex Ingram (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / Morgan Park Academy) improved to 4-2 by giving up just seven hits and no walks.
Michael Kennedy (Sr., Chicago, Ill. / Northside Prep) homered and doubled, and drove in three Macalester runs to lead the attack in game two. He was one of three Scots with three hits on the game, including
Garrett Salzman (So., Glendale, Calif. / St. Francis) and Glasser.
The Scots had 26 hits on the day to finish the season with a .319 team batting average.
