Macalester vs. St. Thomas box scores:
Game 1 |
Game 2
Macalester's 2010 season came to an end Saturday night at home with a doubleheader against MIAC champion and No. 24-ranked St. Thomas. The Tommies received strong pitching in both games and went on to gain a sweep by scores of 8-3 and 7-0 in Macalester's first night softball games on campus.
In the second inning of the opener, Mac catcher
Crystal Barriga (Sr., Broomfield, Colo. / Legacy) doubled to left field to collect her 50th hit of the season, breaking the old school-record of 49 established by Kathryn Miles in 2000. Later in the game, in the sixth inning she singled in two runs. That came following doubles by
Ali Nystrom (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) and
Amanda Cagan (Sr., Saratoga, Calif. / Monta Vista) to get the three-run rally started. Cagan finishes the season with a team-best 17 doubles.
Tommie ace Marta Ratcliffe struck out nine batters through four innings in the circles and St. Thomas went on to pick up the shutout in the nightcap.
Lauren Ballewske (Sr., Racine, Wis. / Horlick) had two of Mac's four hits on the game. Macalester pitchers
Chloe Souza (So., Los Angeles, Calif. / Windward) and
Amanda Knopf (So., Boulder, Colo.) combined to allowed just two earned runs.
St. Thomas, which has now won nine MIAC titles since 2000, heads into the conference playoffs at 34-6 overall and 21-1 in league play. Macalester finishes its season at 8-32 overall, 4-18 in the MIAC.
