Macalester scores 17 runs in nightcap to sweep Bethel

Macalester vs Bethel box scores: Game 1 | Game 2

Macalester picked up an MIAC sweep Saturday at Nicholson Field over the Bethel Royals, winning game one 6-4 and taking the nightcap 17-9.  The Scots move up to 6-10 in the MIAC are 19-15-1 overall.

Five different Scots drove in a run in the opener. Bobby De Meulenaere (Jr., Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove) brought in two runs and Devin English (Sr., Annapolis, Md. / DeMatha) collected a couple hits.

All-MIAC pitcher James Murrey (Sr., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) struggled through the first two frames before taking control of the game, finishing with 13 strikeouts and allowing three earned runs. Murrey now has 100 strikeouts on the season and 298 for his Mac career, and is 8-3 on the season.

Game two starter Alex Ingram (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / Morgan Park Academy) was equally effective in the nightcap despite what the final score would suggest. Ingram improved to 3-2 on the year by blanking the Royals on five hits through five innings before being removed before the sixth inning with the Scots leading 16-0.

Macalester led 5-0 and then put the game what seemed to be out of reach by plating 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bethel responded with nine sixth-inning runs but the deficit was too much to overcome.

Mitch Glasser (So., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School) and Robert Williams (So., West Covina, Calif. / Northview) had three hits apiece to lead the 16-hit attack. Williams and Nate Wilson-Traisman (Sr., Eugene, Ore. / South Eugene) each drove in four runs.

The Royals, who came into the doubleheader with nine wins in their last 11 games, fall to 18-16 overall and 6-10 in the MIAC.

The Scots host Northwestern-Roseville in a non-conference game Tuesday (May 4) at 4:30 p.m. and return to MIAC action Wednesday (May 5) at St. Olaf.
