Macalester gains split with Carleton

Macalester bounced back from a 4-2 setback in the opener to Carleton, taking the nightcap 10-2 to gain the split and pick up its first MIAC win of the season.

Carly Klingensmith (Sr., New York, N.Y. / Nightingale-Bamford School) provided a spark from the No. 9 position in the order, going 5-for-8 on the day with three runs scored to lead the way. Olivia Abbott (Sr., Lakewood, Colo. / Green Mountain) pitched both games and surrendered just four earned runs on the day.

Abbott was in control of the first contest and Macalester led 2-0 before Carleton got back into things with a pair of unearned runs to tie things up in the top of the sixth inning. The Knights scored twice in the seventh to get the victory.

The Scots pounded out a season-high 16 hits in the nightcap in a game shortened to six innings on the eight run rule on a walk-off two-run double by Abbott, who gave up just four hits.

Three Scots led the attack with three hits apiece: Klingensmith, Abbott and Ali Nystrom (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.). Crystal Barriga (Sr., Broomfield, Colo. / Legacy) drove in four runs on a 2-for-3 effort and Abbott had three RBI. Alison Phillips (Sr., Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai Stevenson) also provided a couple hits.

Mac trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the fourth before opening the game up with four runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and another two in the sixth. The Scots took the lead for good with a bases-loaded three-run double by Barriga in the fourth.

The Scots ( 5-19 overall and 1-5 in the conference) play their third MIAC doubleheader in four days when they host St. Mary's Saturday (April 10) at 1 p.m.
