Hamline tops Macalester twice

Macalester vs. Hamline box scores: Game 1 | Game 2

Macalester made the short trip up Snelling Ave. to take on the Hamline Pipers, last year's third-place MIAC team and 28-game winner, and came up short 4-2 in game one as the hosts broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of sixth-inning runs. Hamline scored in all five frames and cruised to a 9-1 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, Olivia Abbott (Sr., Lakewood, Colo. / Green Mountain) pitched well, giving up just seven hits and a walk.

Macalester scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to erase a 2-0 Hamline advantage. In the fourth, Crystal Barriga (Sr., Broomfield, Colo. / Legacy) and Chloe Souza (So., Los Angeles, Calif. / Windward) and singled, and Barriga scored on a Monica Keaney (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa. / Friends Select) two-out single through the ride side. In the fifth, Amanda Cagan (Sr., Saratoga, Calif. / Monta Vista) doubled in Ali Nystrom (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.), who singled and stole second.

The Scots out-hit Hamline 9-7 but left seven runners on base, including two in the top of the sixth with the score tied. Nystrom and Souza had two hits each.

The Pipers dominated the second game, collecting 16 hits, including a homer and three doubles.  Abbott had two of Mac's six hits.

HU improves to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Mac is 4-18 overall, 0-4 in the MIAC.

Macalester jumps right back into MIAC play tomorrow when it plays host to Carleton at 4 p.m.
