Macalester closed out its season over the weekend at the College Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Eastern Championships in Utica, N.Y. The Scots played third-seeded Wheaton (Ill.) closely in Friday's opener in a 14-10 setback, but bounced back in Friday's second game to topple Penn State-Behrend 15-6. In Saturday's fifth-place match, Connecticut College toppled the Scots 12-9.
Sarah Ellerton (Sr., Suffield, Conn. / Suffield Academy) closed out her outstanding Macalester career by being named to the all-tournament team, and
Catherine Flint (So., Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) picked up second team all-tourney honors. Ellerton - Mac's all-time scoring leader - netted 17 goals in Mac's three games and Flint added 11, while being named Player of the Game in the victory over Penn-State Behrend.
Grove City (Pa.) edged Carthage (Wis.) 9-8 for the team championship.
Ellerton and Flint dominated the game with PSU-Behrend, accounting for all 15 Macalester goals. Ellerton scored eight and Flint had seven. The Scots led 7-2 at halftime.
In addition to getting 17 goals from Ellerton and 11 from Flint, Mac picked up two goals apiece from
Jillian Benson (Jr., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) and
Ramona McCabe (So., Santa Cruz, Calif. / San Lorenzo Valley).
Grace Fleming (So., Northampton, Mass.) and
Elizabeth Nelson (Fy., Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Grand Rapids). Goalkeeper
Hannah Strauss-Albee (Fy., Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) was solid in all three games and recorded seven saves in Mac's win.
Ellerton finishes the season with 100 goals, breaking her own school marks for goals in a season.
The Scots finish their season with a 6-15 record.
