Trailing 5-1 in a wild first game, Macalester scored two times in the fifth inning and added five in the sixth to go on top 8-5, only to see visiting Bethel tally seven runs in the top of the seventh to steal a 12-8 decision in a slugfest featuring 29 hits. The MIAC playoff contending Royals completed the sweep and extended their winning streak to six with an 8-1 triumph in the nightcap.
Macalester's 14 hits in the opener is the second-best total of the season.
Crystal Barriga (Sr., Broomfield, Colo. / Legacy) connected for her fourth home run of the season and went 4-for-5 with five RBI.
Olivia Abbott (Sr., Lakewood, Colo. / Green Mountain) went 3-for-3 and
Ali Nystrom (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) was 2-for-4 with a couple runs scored.
Barriga's three-run shot gave Mac an 8-5 sixth-inning lead.
Bethel out-hit Mac 13-4 in the nightcap and was never threatened. Barriga drove in Nystrom for Macalester's lone run. Barriga has 29 RBI in 30 games and is batting .457 this season (42-for-92).
Bethel moves up to 15-15 overall and 7-5 in MIAC competition. The Scots are 6-24 on the season, 2-10 in the MIAC.
The Scots travel Tuesday (April 20) to Moorhead to take on the Concordia Cobbers.
