The Scots fought back from 6-0 deficit in the second game to force extra innings on a warm and sunny day at Macalester Field, but St. Mary's held on to complete the sweep Mac, winning 7-4 in game one and 11-6 in eight innings in the nightcap despite being out-hit.
In the second game, the Scots crossed the plate five times on seven hits in the bottom of the fifth inning and were within a single run at 6-5. Mac added another run in the sixth and the game went into extra frames when both teams failed to score in the seventh. The Cardinals, however, had five hits and five runs in the top of the eighth to win the game.
Monica Keaney (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa. / Friends Select) collected three hits, including a pair of doubles, and
Amanda Cagan (Sr., Saratoga, Calif. / Monta Vista) had three hits and three RBI.
Carly Klingensmith (Sr., New York, N.Y. / Nightengale-Bamford School) and
Ali Nystrom (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) picked up two hits apiece and Klingensmith scored a couple runs.
St. Mary's had 14 hits in the opener and just like in the nightcap, held off a Macalester comeback. The Cards led 3-0 and after Macalester plated two runs in the fifth to get to within a run. They went up 5-2 in the sixth but Mac came to within a run again with another two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-4. SMU then crossed the plate two more times in the top of the seventh to make the lead 7-4.
Klingensmith had two hits and an RBI to lead the Macalester attack. The red-hot Klingensmith is 9-for-15 over her team's last four games for a .643 average.
The Scots are now 5-21 overall and 1-7 in the MIAC. St. Mary's jumps up to 6-10 on the year, 3-1 in the MIAC.
Macalester returns to play Wednesday (April 14) at St. Olaf.
