Auggies take pair from Scots

Macalester vs. Augsburg box scores: Game 1 | Game 2

Macalester opened its MIAC schedule Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader at Augsburg, and came up short in both games, dropping the opener 10-2 and falling in game two 11-3.

The Auggies got the day off to a good start by scoring four times in the bottom of the first inning in game one. Mac cut the lead in half in the top of the second on consecutive singles by Chloe Souza (So., Los Angeles, Calif. / Windward), Alison Phillips (Sr., Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai Stevenson) and Amanda Knopf (So., Boulder, Colo.), followed by an RBI ground out by Carly Klingensmith (Sr., New York, N.Y. / Nightingale-Bamford School) and sacrifice fly by Monica Keaney (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa. / Friends Select).

Augsburg, however, put an end to things by scoring four times in the bottom of the fifth inning to win by the eight-run run.

Macalester got off to a good start in the second contest when Olivia Abbott (Sr., Lakewood, Colo. / Green Mountain) singled as the second batter of the game and scored on an Amanda Cagan (Sr., Saratoga, Calif. / Monta Vista) home run – her first career round-tripper at Mac - to center field. Cagan also doubled later in the game.

Augsburg, off to its best 20-game start since 1992, improves to 12-8 overall and 2-0 in the MIAC, while Macalester is 4-12 on the season, 0-2 in the league.

The Scots travel to Grinnell, Iowa, to play four games Friday and Saturday (April 3-4) at the Hy-Vee Classic. They will take on Grinnell, Graceland (Ia.), Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Washington University of St. Louis.
