Scots play 10 games in Florida

Macalester's 10-game statistics in Florida

Macalester played 10 games at the Gene Cusic Classic in the Fort Meyers area over Spring Break March 14-20 and went 2-8 on the trip, picking up wins over Oswego State (N.Y.) and Stevens Tech (N.J.).

Crystal Barriga (Sr., Broomfield, Colo. / Legacy) batted .483 on the trip (14-for-29) with two home runs and 11 RBI to lead the attack.  Pitchers Olivia Abbott (Sr., Lakewood, Colo. / Green Mountain), Chloe Souza (So., Los Angeles, Calif. / Windward) and Amanda Knopf (So., Boulder, Colo.) combined for a 2.98 earned run average.  Abbott batted .310 and Knopf hit .304.

Sunday, March 14:
College of Brockport (N.Y.) 2, Macalester 1 | box score
NYU-Polytechnic Institute 6, Macalester 4 | box score

Macalester began its 10-game Spring Break trip to Florida by dropping a 1-0 pitcher's duel to the College of Brockport (N.Y.). Alison Phillips (Sr., Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) drove in Crystal Barriga (Sr., Broomfield, Colo. / Legacy) to cut the 2-0 lead in half in the bottom of the ninth inning. Mac pitcher Olivia Abbott (Sr., Lakewood, Colo. / Green Mountain) just gave up lone Brockport runs in the third and eighth frames.

NYU Poly broke a 2-2 by scoring three times in the bottom of the fourth inning and went on to defeat the Scots.  All nine Mac starters in the batting lineup contributed one hit each. 

Monday, March 15:
Roger Williams (R.I.) 2, Macalester 0 | box score
Macalester 5, Oswego State (N.Y.) 0 | box score

Chloe Souza (So., Los Angeles, Calif. / Windward) pitched well, but Roger Williams allowed just three Mac hits.  Souza surrended just six hits. 

Macalester picked up its first Florida win as pitcher Olivia Abbott (Sr., Lakewood, Colo. / Green Mountain) dominated Oswego State, allowing only three hits and a walk for her sixth career shutout.  The Scots capped off a four-run third inning with a two-run Alison Phillips (Sr., Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) single.


Wednesday, March 17:
Wheaton (Mass.) 14, Macalester 0 | box score
Fredonia State (N.Y.) 12, Macalester 8 | box score

Wheaton allowed just one hit and picked up a five-inning decision after scoring nine times in the top of the fifth.  Chloe Souza (So., Los Angeles, Calif. / Windward) kept Wheaton from tossing a no-hitter with a second inning single.

The contest with Fredonia State was the highest-scoring game of the week as these two teams combined for 24 hits and 20 runs.  FSU led 9-3 before Macalester made things interesting by chalking up five runs in the bottom of the frame to get within a run.  Olivia Abbott (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) and Crystal Barriga (Sr., Broomfield, Colo. / Legacy) each collected three hits for the Scots.

Thursday, March 18:
Macalester 3, Stevens Tech (N.J.) 1 | box score
Salem State (Mass.) 5, Macalester 4 | box score

Amanda Cagan (Sr., Saratoga, Calif. / Monta Vista), Crystal Barriga (Sr., Broomfield, Colo. / Legacy) and Alison Phillips (Sr., Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai Stevenson) drove in single runs each and Olivia Abbott (Sr., Lakewood, Colo. / Green Mountain) tossed a five-hitter, striking out six batters and walking just one, as the Scots picked up their second win of the trip against Stevens Tech.

Trailing 5-0 going into the seventh and final inning, the Scots suddenly made things very interesting with a Crystal Barriga (Sr., Broomfield, Colo. / Legacy) grand slam, but Salem State was able to close out the win.  Barriga and Chloe Souza (So., Los Angeles, Calif. / Windward) had a couple hits apiece.

Saturday, March 20:
New Paltz (N.Y.) 8, Macalester 6 | box score
Wisconsin-Superior 12, Macalester 4 | box score

New Paltz broke open a 4-4 game with four runs in the top of the sixth inning, and held off a seventh inning Macalester threat to win 8-6.  Crystal Barriga (Sr., Broomfield, Colo. / Legacy) went 3-for-3 with a home run, and Amanda Cagan (Sr., Saratoga, Calif. / Monta Vista) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.  Alison Phillips (Sr., Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai Stevenson) added a pair of hits.

Wisconsin-Superior led 6-4 and put things away with six runs in the bottom of the fifth as their Scots wrapped up their trip to Florida.  Chloe Souza (So., Los Angeles, Calif. / Windward) had two hits and two RBI for the Scots.
