Scots play eight in California; Ellerton becomes Mac's all-time scoring leader

Macalester played eight games in California over Spring Break against top-quality opponents.  The Scots completed their trip with a 1-7 record, having defeated Caltech on Thursday.

Against Redlands on Friday (March 29), senior Sarah Ellerton (Suffield, Conn. / Suffield Academy) became Macalester's all-time career goal-scoring leader.  Ellerton passed Jackie DeLuca, who played from 2004-07 and finished with 250 career goals.

Ellerton and Catherine Flint (So., Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) combined to net 48 goals in the eight games.  Ellerton finished the week with 27 goals, 17 assists and 31 stolen balls.  Flint contributed 21 goals, 10 assists and 26 steals.

Jillian Benson (Jr., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) added six goals, nine assists and 11 steals.  Goalkeeper Hannah Strauss-Albee (Fy., Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) blocked 71 shots and also contributed 10 steals and four assists.

Saturday, March 13:
Cal State East Bay 16, Macalester 4 | statistics

The Scots opened their California trip with a 12-goal defeat to Cal State East Bay, which led 11-1 at halftime.  Catherine Flint (So., Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) accounted for three of Mac's four goals.

Sunday, March 14:
Cal State Monterey Bay 16, Macalester 6 | statistics

Cal State Monterey Bay led 7-3 at the intermission and put things away with seven third quarter scores.  Catherine Flint (So., Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) netted four goals and had four steals, and Sarah Ellerton (So., Suffield, Conn. / Suffield Academy) scored twice to go along with two assists and seven steals.  Romona McCabe (So., Santa Cruz, Calif. / San Lorenzo Valley) picked up three steals and Hannah Strauss-Albee (Fy., Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) registered 10 saves.

Tuesday, March 16:
La Verne 14, Macalester 7

Sarah Ellerton (Sr., Suffield, Conn. / Suffield Academy) finished with three goals, three assists and three steals, but La Verne toppled the Scots 14-7.  Catherine Flint (So., Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) netted a pair of goals, while scoring one each were Jillian Benson (Jr., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) and Elizabeth Nelson (Fy., Grand Rapids, Mich. / East).

Wednesday, March 17:
Cal Baptist 19, Macalester 4 | statistics

The Scots took on a very good California Baptist University team in Riverside and were defeated 19-4.  Sarah Ellerton (Sr., Suffield, Conn. / Suffield Academy) scored three of her team's four goals, and Jillian Benson (Jr., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) netted the other.  Goalkeeper Hannah Strauss-Albee (Fy., Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) had eight saves, two assists and a steal.

Thursday, March 18:
Macalester 14, Caltech 12

Mac led 11-4 at halftime and held on to beat Caltech in Pasadena as the Scots chalked up their second win of the season.  Sarah Ellerton (Sr., Suffield, Conn. / Suffield Academy) led the way with six goals, five assists and four steals.  Catherine Flint (So., Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) also had a big game, finishing with four goals and three assists.  Jillian Benson (Jr., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) and Ramona McCabe (So., Santa Cruz, Calif. / San Lorenzo Valley) added one goal apiece and goalkeeper Hannah Strauss-Albee (Fy., Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) made 10 saves and assisted on one Mac goal.

Fresno Pacific 23, Macalester 7
Redlands 21, Macalester 9
