Scots lose first two games at nationals

UC-Santa Cruz and Occidental handed Macalester defeats during the first day of competition at the Collegiate III national tournament at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

The Scots fell to the UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs 12-5 in the morning contest and lost 15-7 in the afternoon match to the Tigers of Occidental. Santa Cruz is the No. 4 ranked Division III team in the nation and Occidental is No. 3.

Sarah Ellerton (Jr., Suffield, Conn. / Suffield Academy) and Catherine Anderson (Fy., Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) each netted two goals and Bailey Gucinski (Fy., Chicago, Ill. / Waubonsie Valley) scored once in the game with Santa Cruz. The Banana Slugs led 3-2 after the first quarter of play and were on top 6-3 at halftime.

Mac staged an upset bid against Occidental and led 7-6 at the intermission, only to get out-scored 9-0 in the second half. Ellerton rifled in three goals to lead the Scots, while Anderson and Gucinski added two scores apiece. Sofia Shaw (Sr., Tacoma, Wash. / Stadium) recorded 10 saves in net.

Macalester plays Saturday morning in their final pool play game, taking on Grove City. The Scots will then play an afternoon match against a team from the other pool.

Four teams went 2-0 in today's action including: Pomona-Pitzer, Occidental, Redlands and UC Santa Cruz. These four teams have guaranteed their spots in the semifinals with a chance to make a title game appearance. Four teams went 0-2 in today's action including: Mac, CSU East Bay, Grove City and Washington & Jefferson. These four teams will battle for fifth through eighth place positions.
