The Scots opened up their new softball complex Thursday afternoon after playing their home games away from campus the last two years, but title-contending Gustavus had too much pitching and spoiled the home opener by gaining 8-0 and 10-0 shutout victories to stay on top of the league standings.
Gustavus scored twice in the second and third frames in the opener and then put things away with four runs in the fourth, and in the nightcap received a five-inning perfect game from Erin Truebenbach. The Gusties belted four homers in game two, including a grand slam.
The Gusties stay on top of the MIAC at 8-0 and with their 10th straight win improve to 19-3 overall. Macalester drops to 5-17 on the year and 0-8 in MIAC play.
Macalester had four hits in the opener, one each from
Ali Nystrom (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.),
Amanda Cagan (Jr., Saratoga, Calif. / Monta Vista),
Chloe Souza (Fy., Los Angeles, Calif. / Windward) and
Kate Ziegler (Sr., Oak Park, Ill. / Oak Park-River Forest). Nystrom, the team's leading hitter on the season with a .366 average, opened the doubleheader with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, but was gunned down at the plate on a Cagan single.
The Scots jump right back into action tomorrow when they host Augsburg at 12 noon.
