Macalester beat Martin Luther College 8-0 and 11-3 at home to wind up the 2009 season on a winning note.
Olivia Abbott (Jr., Lakewood, Colo. / Green Mountain) tossed her fifth career shutout in game one and
Crystal Barriga (Jr., Broomfield, Colo. / Legacy) belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game. Barriga, who hit two homers in the opener, went 4- for-4 in the second contest to finish her day with seven hits in eight at-bats, with two home runs, eight RBI and four runs scored.
The Scots finish up the campaign at 10-28, while the Knights close out at 18-17. Macalester belted out 29 hits and three home runs on the day.
While Abbott was mowing down the Knights, allowing just three hits and a single walk while striking out seven batters, Barriga was taking care of run production with a two-run blast in the third and a three-run shot in the sixth. Abbott helped her cause with two hits and two runs scored.
Martin Luther attacked quickly in game two, getting a leadoff round-tripper and scoring two runs in the top of the first. The Scots, however, responded with seven hits in the bottom of the frame (including six in a row), getting a grand slam from
Chloe Souza (Fy., Los Angeles, Calif. / Windward) and two-run single from
Carly Klingensmith (Jr., New York, N.Y. / Nightingale-Bamford School). Souza's blast was her first collegiate homer.
Amanda Cagan (Jr., Saratoga, Calif. / Monta Vista) went 3-for-4 and in the doubleheader scored five runs.
Pitcher
Amanda Knopf (Fy., Boulder, Colo.) picked up the win in the nightcap, settling down after the first inning, striking out six batters on the game while not allowing a walk.
With her 4-for-4 effort, Barriga closes out her season with a .382 average and 34 runs driven in. The all-conference catcher / outfielder has driven in 73 runs in 71 games over the past two seasons while batting .394.
