Macalester Day 1 recap
After winning their three games Friday, the Scots toppled Colorado College 10-3 to reach the finals of the Midwest Region Tournament at the Riley Pool. Although they fell in an exciting 8-7 battle with Carthage (Wis.) in the finals Saturday afternoon, the Scots clinched the region's automatic berth into the May 1-3 Collegiate III national tournament in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
Macalester's
Sofia Shaw (Sr., Tacoma, Wash. / Stadium) and
Sarah Ellerton (Jr., Suffield, Conn. / Suffield Academy) were named Midwest Region Co-Most Valuable Players and were joined on the all-region team by
Catherine Anderson (Fy., Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) and
Bailey Gucinski (Fy., Chicago, Ill. / Waubonsie Valley).
The Scots beat Colorado College by a 10-3 score for the second day in a row to reach the finals. Ellerton led the way with three goals and four steals, while Anderson and Gucinski added two scores apiece. Anderson also assisted on two goals and Shaw recorded 10 saves.
Ramona McCabe (Fy., Santa Cruz, Calif. / San Lorenzo Valley) contributed to the cause with a goal, an assist and two steals, while Gucinski had three steals.
Ellerton netted five of the team's seven goals in the narrow defeat to Carthage in the finals, while the defense was led by Anderson with seven steals, and Gucinski and Ellerton with four. Gucinski and Anderson also scored goals for the Scots. Carthage put an end to Mac's eight-game winning streak and avenged three prior losses to the Scots this season.
California Lutheran University will host the national tourney in two weeks.
