Barriga powers Scots to split with St. Benedict

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Macalester vs. St. Benedict box scores: Game 1 | Game 2

Crystal Barriga
(Jr., Broomfield, Colo. / Legacy) homered and doubled, going 3-for-3 in the nightcap with four runs driven in to lead Macalester to a split with St. Benedict Tuesday afternoon in St. Joseph. After falling in the opener 11-2, the Scots earned their second straight MIAC split with a 6-4 victory in game two. St. Ben's was coming off a big upset last week over powerhouse St. Thomas, ending UST's streak of 63 straight wins against conference opponents.

The highlight of game one for the Scots was Ali Nystrom's (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) first career home run. Other than that, however, the Blazers were in charge.

Game two was a different story as Macalester took charge with a first inning run and then went on top 6-0 with three runs in the top of the fourth and two more in the fourth. Amanda Knopf (Fy., Boulder, Colo.) and Olivia Abbott (Jr., Lakewood, Colo. / Green Mountain) pitched well, combining to yield just six hits and a walk while striking out five Blazers.

Barriga singled in Nystrom in the opening frame to give the Scots the lead for good. In the third, Abbott and Amanda Cagan (Jr., Saratoga, Calif. / Monta Vista) singled and scored on a Barriga double. Alison Phillips (Jr., Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) singled in Barriga to make the score 4-0. Barriga's two-run round-tripper in the fourth, her first of the season and eighth of her career, put Mac up 6-0.

In addition to getting three hits and four RBI from Barriga, the Scots received a couple hits each from Phillips and Abbott.

Macalester is now 7-21 on the season and 2-12 in the MIAC. The Blazers are 7-13 overall, 3-5 in the MIAC.

The Scots play host to St. Catherine on Thursday (April 16) at 4 p.m.
