The Scots gave new head coach
Jennie Charlesworth a win in her first game at Mac, defeating the University of Minnesota Club team 16-3 at Riley Pool. Macalester went out on top 4-0 after the first quarter and led by a commanding 9-0 margin at halftime. This was the first water polo game on campus after playing and practicing off campus during the Leonard Center construction.
Sarah Ellerton (Jr., Suffield, Conn. / Suffield Academy) netted five goals and
Bailey Gucinski (Fy., Chicago, Ill. / Waubonsie Valley) scored four times to lead the Macalester attack, and goalkeeper
Sofia Shaw (Sr., Tacoma, Wash. / Stadium) registered 10 saves to keep the U of M in check.
Harris Grigoropoulos (So., Chicago, Ill. / Northside Prep) and
Catherine Anderson (Fy., Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) registered a couple of goals each, while the Scots received one goal each from
Aubrey Harding (Jr., Salem, Ore. / South Salem),
Melinda Vogel (So., Santa Barbara, Calif. / San Marcos) and
Megan Davies (Fy., Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer).
Anderson, Gucinski and Shaw gained three steals apiece to lead the Macalester defense.
The Scots are off until playing a grueling nine-game schedule over Spring Break March 14-21 in Southern California. Macalester will play some top-notch competition in California, taking on Whittier (twice), La Verne (twice), Chapman, Cal Lutheran, Redlands, Occidental and Caltech.
