Macalester's 2009 softball season got underway Monday morning with a doubleheader against Bethany Lutheran at the Rosemount Dome. The Scots toppled the Vikings 8-3 in the opener, but Bethany Lutheran came back to win the second game 4-2.
Olivia Abbott (Jr., Lakewood, Colo. / Green Mountain) yielded just seven hits and a couple earned runs in Monday's first game, striking out 10 while walking just a pair of batters. Abbott's 10 strikeouts is the second time she has reached double figures in K's. She fanned 11 batters in last year's opener against Bethany Lutheran for her personal best.
The Scots received two hits apiece from
Ali Nystrom (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) and Abbott. Abbott scored three runs, Nystrom scored twice, and
Crystal Barriga (Jr. Broomfield, Colo. / Legacy) had a two-run double.
With the score tied at 2-2, the Scots took the lead with a solo third-inning tally and put things away with four runs in the bottom of the fourth frame.
The Scots were held to three hits in the nightcap. The Vikings jumped out on top 3-0 in the opening frame and held on the rest of the way.
The Scots return to the Rosemount Dome next Wednesday (March 11) to play Minnesota-Morris.
