Macalester began its nine-game Spring Break schedule in Southern California with a solid effort in a 13-11 loss to Whittier at the Claremont Convergence Saturday morning. The Scots, who lost to Whittier 14-2 last season, gave the Poets all they could handle after falling behind 4-0 after a quarter of play.
Catherine Anderson (Fy., Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) beat the Whittier goalkeeper for five scores, and
Sarah Ellerton (Sr., Suffield, Conn. / Suffield Academy) scored three goals to lead the Scots.
Bailey Gucinski (Fy., Chicago, Ill. / Waubonsie Valley) added a pair of scores, while also earning three ejections and picking up a couple steals. Ellerton also came up with two assists and three stolen balls. Playing in her hometown,
Ari Litman (Fy., Claremont, Calif. / Vivian Webb School) contributed three steals and three earned ejections.
Claire Eder (So., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) netted one goal.
Sofia Shaw (Sr., Tacoma, Wash. / Stadium) registered 13 saves, one more than the Whittier goalkeeper.
With 3:13 left in the fourth quarter, Gucinski scored to bring Macalester to within just a single goal. However, Whittier netted two more tallies before Gucinski scored the final goal of the game.
Five third quarter Macalester goals turned a 6-2 halftime deficit into a slim 9-7 lead for the Poets heading into the final period. Anderson and Ellerton each had two third quarter scores.
