Macalester vs. Martin Luther statistics
Martin Luther pulled away from a 6-6 halftime deadlock to beat Macalester 34-20 in St. Paul. The Knights racked up 525 yards to improve to 6-2 on the season, while the Scots drop to 2-6 with a couple games to go.
The Scots enjoyed success passing the ball down field and averaged 17 yards per reception. Quarterback
Trevor Miehe (Jr., Holmen, Wis.) went 17-for-33 for 288 yards with three TD aerials and now has thrown for over 250 yards in three of his team's past four games.
Jon Elliott (Jr., El Paso, Tex. / Andress) gained 101 yards and a touchdown on his four receptions.
Matt Mitchell (Jr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) caught five passes for 57 yards and two TDs, and
Mike Snavely (So., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) grabbed five receptions for 52 yards. Joining the parade was
Kevin Finnegan (Jr., Oak Park, Ill. / Oak Park-River Forest) with three catches for 74 yards.
Martin Luther, however, shut down the Macalester running attack while dominating on the ground itself. The Knights, who came in as the No. 8 ranked rushing team in the NCAA Division III level, ran the ball 56 times for 373 yards and three touchdowns. Andrew Becker ran 22 times for 206 yards, and had a pair of second half touchdowns, and quarterback Greg Holzhueter added 91 rushing yards while going 8-for-15 for 152 yards.
The Knights moved the chains for 30 first downs and were 7-for-9 on third-down conversions.
Macalester forced three turnovers to keep the game close until MLC opened up the contest with a pair of third quarter touchdowns and an early fourth quarter score to go up 34-13. Miehe, who had already tossed 20- and five-yard TDs to Mitchell, hit Elliott for a 52-yard connection to close the scoring.
Three Scots registered double-digit figures in the tackle column to lead the defense.
Josh Boomgaarden (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) was in on 14 stops, followed by
Tyler Hill (Fy., Beaver Dam, Wis. / Wayland Academy) with 11 and
Matt Elliott (Jr., El Paso, Tex. / Andress) with 10.
Donovan Kavish (Fy., Springfield, Ill. / Sacred Heart-Griffin) intercepted his first pass of the season. Macalester made seven tackles for loss of yardage, including 2 ½ by Hill.
Macalester plays Friday (Oct. 30) against Minnesota-Morris at the Metrodome at 11 a.m. Fans should enter Gate B. Tickets will be available at Gate B and are $10 for adults, $7 for college students, $5 for children (grades K-12), and free for children under age 5).
