Macalester improved to 3-0, matching last season's win total, by knocking off No. 19-ranked Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the first of four matches over the weekend at the Augsburg Invitational in Minneapolis. The two sets UWEC took were by easy 25-11 and 25-10 scores. The Scots, however, won the close ones, claiming game two 25-22, game four 25-23 and game five 15-11.
In Friday's evening match, the Scots continued their winning ways, moving to a perfect 4-0 by sweeping Schreiner (Tex.) 25-16, 25-16 and 25-20.
This is Mac's first 4-0 start to a season in over 20 years.
In the big win over Eau Claire,
Danielle Dweck (Fy., Glen Head, N.Y. / North Shore) handed out 29 assists in the five games – setting up
Marie Godwin (Jr., Chaska, Minn.) with a team-leading eight kills.
Sonia Muzikarova (Sr., Bratislava, Slovakia / Gymnazium Bilikova) spiked seven kills.
Majra Mucic (So., Zenica, Bosnia / St. Louis Park – Minn.) added six kills and
Taylor Tinkham (Fy., St. Louis Park, Minn.) added five kills to go along with a team-best five assists.
Muzikarova and Tinkham led the defensive effort with 13 digs each, while Godwin chipped in with 10.
Against Schreiner, Dweck provided 31 assists and Muzikarova led the effort at the net with 10 kills. Godwin led the defense with 12 kills.
Mac hit .276 for the match.
Several Scots are among tourney statistical leaders in this eight-team event. Through the first two of four matches, Tinkham is third among all players with 1.00 blocks per set. Dweck is fifth in assists (7.5), Mucic is eighth in hitting percentage (.300) and Muzikarova is ranked ninth in kills per set (2.13).
The Scots play tomorrow morning against Augsburg and then will play one other match.
