Bethesda connection beats Bethel in 88th minute

(Sr., Bethesda, Md. / Chevy Chase) assisted on a Scott Petesch (Jr., Bethesda, Md. / Walter Johnson) game-winning goal in the 88th minute as Macalester turned away visiting Bethel 1-0 in a defensive-minded MIAC match in St. Paul. The Scots, who have surrendered just six goals in seven games, improve to 4-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the MIAC . The Royals drop to 1-7 overall, 0-3 in the MIAC.

Goalkeeper Mark Mullaney (So., Plymouth, Minn. / Robbinsdale Armstrong) posted his third shutout in four starts and lowers his goals against average to 0.69.

Beating the keeper will a well-placed shot from six yards out with 2:00 on the clock, Petesch has accounted for four of his team's seven goals on the season. Earlier this season he scored on a free kick from about 40 yards away into the upper corner. He's also had a game-winning penalty kick in overtime.

Mac out-shot Bethel 16-5, getting three shots off the foot of Samuelson. The Scots had a 16-6 disadvantage in fouls committed and the Royals had the game's only corner kick.

The Scots played four of their next five matches in unfriendly territory, beginning with an MIAC contest Saturday (Sept. 20) in Northfield against the St. Olaf Oles.
