Scots bounce back from extra-inning loss to split with Oles

Game 1 box score | Game 2 box score

Macalester bounced back from an extra-inning defeat in game one to gain an MIAC split with St. Olaf at the Rice / Arlington Field in St. Paul. St. Olaf won the first game 4-3 in eight innings and Macalester claimed the nightcap 6-3. Mac is now 6-10 overall and 1-3 in the MIAC, while St. Olaf is 8-8 overall, 1-3 in league play.

After forcing extra frames in the opening game with a game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Scots gave up the game-winning tally in the top of the eighth. St. Olaf went out in front quickly with three runs in the top of the first, but after that, Macalester starter Olivia Abbott (So., Lakewood, Colo. / Green Mountain) settled down and took control of the game.

Hayley Reeves (Fy., Oberlin, Ohio) cut the deficit to 3-2 with a two-run homer to left field in the fourth inning, driving in Amanda Cagan (So., Saratoga, Calif. / Monta Vista), who started the rally with a double. Meredith Wisniewski (Jr., Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) singled in Ali Nystrom (So., Minnetonka, Minn.) in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

Both teams had their chances to open up significant leads, but each left 11 base runners stranded.

The Scots took control of the nightcap early, posting a couple runs in each of the second and third innings. Mac led 6-0 before the Oles threatened a comeback with three runs in the top of the seventh.

Three Scots provided three hits apiece to lead the offensive charge: Nystrom, Katie Grudnowski (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn. / Blake) and Monica Keaney (So., Philadelphia, Pa. / Friends Select). The team made numerous sound fielding plays and committed just one error in each game.

Macalester returns to action Wednesday (April 9) at Augsburg.
