St. Benedict rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to win game one 3-2, and followed that up with an 11-6 victory in the second game to sweep Macalester at Dunning Softball Complex.
Macalester is now 6-16 in the '08 campaign and 1-9 in the MIAC. The Blazers go to 6-13 on the season and 2-6 in MIAC play with their first two conference victories.
Olivia Abbott (So., Lakewood, Colo. / Green Mountain) pitched a strong game in the opener, striking out eight batters and scattering just five hits before the visitors rallied with three hits and the game-tying and game-winning runs in the seventh.
Meredith Wisniewski (Jr., Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) drove in a second inning run on a sacrifice fly and in the fourth inning Mac went up 2-1 after
Lisa Moldan (Fy., Sleepy Eye, Minn. / St. Mary's) singled and came around to score.
Abbott went a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with three runs scored in the nightcap and
Crystal Barriga (So., Broomfield, Colo. / Legacy) went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Barriga tops the team with a .353 batting average and 22 RBI.
Amanda Cagan (So., Saratoga, Calif. / Monta Vista) contributed two hits, as she did in the first game. With the 26-hit slugfest deadlocked at 6-6 after four frames, St. Benedict put things away with four runs in the top of the fifth inning.
The Scots return to action Thursday (April 17) at St. Catherine at 4 p.m.
