The Scots beat host-Wheaton by a goal and tied Colorado College while going 1-3-1 over the weekend at the Midwest Invitational in Wheaton, Ill. Macalester fell to Grove City (Pa.) 8-1 in the opener and played better in a 12-7 defeat to eventual tournament champion Carthage (Wis.). In Friday's third and final game, Macalester and Colorado College battled to a 10-10 tie.
On Saturday, the Scots started off with a close 5-4 triumph over Wheaton before closing out the tourney with a 10-5 defeat to tourney runner-up Washington & Jefferson (Pa.).
Macalester jumped out to a 3-0 first quarter lead in its victory over Wheaton and hung on for its third win over the season.
Sarah Ellerton (So., Suffield, Conn. / Suffield Academy) scored three of her team's five goals. Goalkeeper
Sofia Shaw (Jr., Tacoma, Wash. / Stadium) registered 21 saves to lead the team's defensive effort.
In the team's 10-10 tie with Colorado College, the Scots rallied from a 7-4 halftime deficit. Ellerton netted five goals to lead the way, while
Jillian Benson (Fy., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) and
Katie Mertz (So., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) each added two goals.
Ellerton scored 13 goals to lead the team over the weekend, and also led Mac with 13 ejections drawn. Shaw registered 71 saves in the five games.
Lizzy McNamara (Sr., Dallas, Tex. / Hillcrest) netted five goals, second best on the team, while Benson scored four.
Macalester is off until the April 18-19 Midwest Region Championships at Colorado Springs. The Scots will play Carthage, Colorado College, Wheaton and one more opponent, with a berth in the Collegiate III national tournament up for grabs.
