Macalester's season got off to a good start as the Scots took a double-header from Bethany Lutheran College at the Rosemount Dome. The Scots scored three first inning runs and went on to win the opener 8-0 and scored another three runs in the top of the first frame in the nightcap before finishing with a 9-4 victory.
Pitcher
Olivia Abbott (So., Lakewood, Colo. / Green Mountain) tossed a three-hit shutout in the first game, striking out a career-high 11 in the five-inning affair. Abbott then fanned six batters in three innings of duty in the nightcap, finishing with six strikeouts against just one hit. On the day, she struck out 17 batters in eight innings while surrendering just four hits.
Crystal Barriga (So., Broomfield, Colo. / Legacy) also began her campaign in a big way, belting a pair of home runs and adding a double in Mac's game one victory, and then going 2-for-4 with a double and sacrifice fly in the second game. She was 5-for-7 on the day with six RBI, four runs, two home runs and a couple doubles.
In addition to getting three hits from Barriga in the opener, the Scots received a pair of hits each from
Ali Nystrom (So., Minnetonka),
Amanda Cagan (So., Saratoga, Calif. / Monta Vista) and
Meredith Wisniewski (Jr., Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South).
Nystrom pitched the final four innings in relief of Abbott to claim the win in the second game. She was supported by a 4-for-4 hitting performance by
Allison Phillips (So., Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai Stevenson). Phillips drove in two runs and scored a couple.
Monica Keaney (So., Philadelphia, Pa. / Friends Select) finished with a pair of doubles and three RBI.
Katie Grudnowski (So., Minnetonka, Minn. / Blake School) went 2-for-3 with two walks and a couple RBI.
The Scots out-hit the Vikings 24-8 on the day.
It's now off to Florida for 10 games over Spring Break March 16-21 at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, where the team will take on Polytechnic (N.Y.), Trinity (Conn.), Hope (Mich.), Millikin (Ill.), Endicott (Mass.), Rowan (N.J.), Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio), William Paterson (N.J.) and McDaniel (Md.).
