Overtime PK by Petesch
After Concordia-Moorhead tied things up in the 89th minute, the Scots were able to escape with a 3-2 victory on their home field when
Scott Petesch (Jr., Bethesda, Md. / Walter Johnson) converted a penalty kick chance 4:21 into overtime after teammate
Ryan Marshall (Fy., Plymouth, Minn. / Robbinsdale Armstrong) was tackled in the box.
This was Petesch's second overtime PK game-winner on the season and keeps Macalester in the hunt for an MIAC playoff bid as the Scots move up to 7-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in league play. The Cobbers drop to 4-8 and 1-6.
Jesse Geary (Fy., Duluth, Minn. / Marshall) assisted on Mac's first two goals, setting up headers by
Eric Tettegah (So., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Breck School) at 17:45 and
Stephen Murphy-Logue (So., Anchorage, Ak. / West) at 42:28. Murphy-Logue's header gave Macalester a 2-1 halftime lead and that's where the score remained until CC's Riley McGlynn scored at 88:21.
Petesch leads the team with six goals and has been dangerous on free kicks, as well as penalty kicks, all season. Making his second career start in goal,
Matt Weyer (Fy., Cedarburg, Wis.) turned away four Cobber shots on goal to boost his record to 2-0.
Mac out-shot Concordia by a slim 16-13 margin, but took big advantage of an 11-6 corner kick margin.
Macalester is 6-1-1 at home and plays another MIAC match on its FieldTurf surface when St. Mary's comes to town for a contest Friday night (Oct. 10) at 7:45 p.m.
