Macalester settled for a scoreless tie after 90 minutes of regulation play and 20 minutes of overtime competition with St. Catherine at Macalester Stadium. The Wildcats damage the hopes of Macalester making it into the four-team post-season MIAC playoffs, but the Scots can still get in with victories in their final two regular-season games.
Upstart St. Catherine, coached by former Macalester assistant Steve Bellis, stays over .500 at 7-6-2 overall and is now 3-5-1 in the MIAC. The Scots also remain over .500 at 8-7-1 on the season and are in sixth place in the league at 5-3-1.
If the Scots win out, they will pass Augsburg (who they play in the finale) and the loser of the Concordia / St. Benedict match. If the Cobbers and Blazers tie, Macalester may need to win a tie-breaker. Carleton is in the driver's seat to join St. Thomas in the post-season, but could fall out of it with a couple losses.
Mac's two final regular-season games are Saturday (Oct. 26) at Gustavus Adolphus and next Friday (Oct. 31) at home against Augsburg. Both opponents pose a very serious challenge to Macalester's bid for the playoffs.
St. Catherine received 12 saves from its goalkeeper and despite a 22-5 Mac shot advantage, almost took the win by shooting one off the crossbar in the second overtime session. Macalester had 12 shots on goal, including five by
Lauryn Gutierrez (So., Hickory, N.C. / St. Stephen's) and three by
Jordan Eckstein (So., Northampton, Mass.). Goalkeeper
Jenny Lee (Sr., Circle Pines, Minn. / Circle Pines) made four saves and lowers her goals against average on the season to an even 1.00 through 13 starts.
