Scots suffer heart-breaking loss to Augsburg

Augsburg pulled off a win in the fifth and decisive set to gain a 3-2 MIAC victory over Macalester in a heart-breaking defeat for the Scots at Leonard Center. Game scores for the Scots were 22-25, 25-14, 24-26, 25-18 and 12-15. Macalester drops to 4-10 on the year and 0-4 in the MIAC, while Augsburg is now 10-8 overall, 1-3 in conference play. The Scots out-scored the Auggies 108-98 through the five games but all three sets dropped came by three points or less.

Sonia Muzikarova (Bratislava, Slovakia / Gymnazium Bilikova) and Majra Mucic (So., Zenica, Bosnia / St. Louis Park (Minn.)) combined for 35 kills to lead the attack at the net for the Scots, and each recorded season-highs in kills. Muzikarova led the way with 19 kills to go along with four serving aces and 14 digs. Mucic hit at a .406 rate and spiked 16 kills, while also serving four aces. Mac had 13 aces on the match.

Danielle Dweck (Fy., Glen Head, N.Y. / North Shore) handed out a season-high 39 assists. Kiera Coulter (So., Davis, Calif.) and Marie Godwin (Jr., Chaska, Minn.) led the defensive effort with 18 digs apiece, while Taylor Tinkham (Fy., St. Louis Park, Minn.) had three blocks and seven kills.

Augsburg was led by Dani Tanaka with 24 digs. Breann Woelfel had 14 kills and Katie Christensen added 13. Setter Shanna Reed dished out 37 assists. The Auggies battled back from a 21-14 deficit to claim the crucial third set.

The Scots return to action Friday (Oct. 3) when they host Bethel for Dig Pink Night.
