Gustavus Adolphus received 150 yards rushing from Mitch Anderson and 151 yards receiving from Chad Arlt and went out to defeat Macalester 41-12 in St. Peter. Gustavus, which improves to 4-3 on the season, was five-for-five on red-zone scoring chances and finished with 469 yards in offense, compared to 334 for the Scots. Macalester drops to 2-5 with two games to go. Each team suffered three turnovers.
The Gusties led 34-0 at the halftime break behind three Jordan Stolp touchdown passes and a couple John Ostertag field goals.
Macalester, which lost to Gustavus by a much-wider 51-0 margin a year ago in St. Paul , played a much better second half and on the day finished with 17 first downs, 196 yards passing and 138 yards rushing. The running back combo of Jeff Wankel (Sr., Bloomer, Wis.) and Jakub Koziol (Sr., Chicago, Ill. / St. Patrick) had their second straight productive game as a tandem. Wankel finished with a 5.1 average, rushing 17 times for 86 yards. Koziol finished with 63 yards on 19 carries. In the team's previous game against Colorado College, Koziol ran for 114 yards and Wankel added 86.
Trevor Miehe (Fr., Holmen, Wis.) completed half of his 36 passing attempts for 196 yards, tossing third-quarter touchdowns to Jeremy Lyons (Sr., Columbia, Ill.) from six yards out and Matt Mitchell (Fr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) from three yards away.
The first score capped an 11-play, 57-yard drive and Mitchell's TD capped a seven-play, 65-yard possession on the team's next drive, which included a deep 36-yard strike from Miehe to John Elliott (Fr., El Paso, Tex. / Andress) to make it first-and-goal.
Eric Kelly (Fr., Lyons, Colo.) was Macalester's leading receiver with three catches for 57 yards.
Ed Fitzpatrick (Jr., Honolulu , Hi. / Iolani) was in on 13 tackles to lead the defense. Zach Hahn (Jr., Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) made 12 tackles and forced a fumble and Josh Boomgarden (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) registered nine tackles. Gavin Keisling (Jr., Page, Ariz.) had two tackles for loss of yardage among his eight stops, while Brian Foster (Fr., Shannon, Miss.) picked off his second pass of the season.
Gustavus quarterback Stolp went 19-for-27 for 292 yards and three touchdowns. Jared Sieling led the defensive effort with 10 tackles. The Gusties overcame 13 penalties for 100 yards.
The Scots are off next weekend and will return to action Saturday, Nov. 3 at Crown.
