Tim Walen joined the Macalester staff as an assistant volleyball coach in August 2017. Walen comes to Macalester after spending the last 11 seasons as the head coach at Hill-Murray School in Maplewood, Minn.
“I am incredibly excited for the opportunity to coach at Macalester,” Walen said. “I look forward to supporting Coach Graves in challenging our student athletes to achieve great things.”
During his time at Hill-Murray, he led the volleyball team to eight conference championships, two section championships, a Class AA State runner-up finish in 2013 and a Class AA State consolation title in 2015. His teams had a record of 213-64 during his tenure.
During the off-season, Walen actively coaches Junior Olympic volleyball with MN Select, located in Maple Grove. He has also coached with the Eden Prairie Volleyball Association and the Centennial Volleyball Club, and was co-director and coach with Frontier Volleyball Club.
Originally born and raised in Tucson, Ariz., he finally considers himself a Minnesotan after 25 years in the Twin Cities. Walen graduated from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and currently works as an office administrator in Minneapolis. Walen, his wife, Kathy and two daughters, Whitney and Lucy, live in Roseville.
