ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team earned its third MIAC win with a 2-1 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College Tuesday night at a rainy John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The Scots improve to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while the Gusties drop to 1-6-2, 0-3-1 MIAC.
Macalester broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 12th minute. Sophomore forward
Lindsay Edmonson (North Kingstown, R.I./LaSalle Academy) took a shot that was saved off the line by a Gustavus defender. The rebound went to senior defender
Abbey Birkey (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids), who volleyed the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Less than seven minutes later, Gustavus tied it up when Tessa Zachmann knocked home a rebound off a shot by Jordyn Shear in the 18th minute. The score remained tied into the second half despite good scoring chances for both teams. Then in the 65th minute, Edmonson was taken down in the penalty area while pursuing the ball and a penalty kick was awarded. Edmonson took the penalty kick and placed a shot into the lower right corner of the goal to put the Scots on top, 2-1.
Junior goalkeeper
