ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team fell to the College of Saint Benedict in a rainy away game on Saturday at CSB Stadium. The Scots let two shots through in the first half and were unable to put themselves on the board, even after matching the Bennies in shots over the second half. With the loss, Macalester is brought to a 5-5 overall record and 3-2 within the MIAC. St. Ben's rises to 7-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the conference.
The game's first scoring play fell in the 15th minute, when the Bennies' low-center shot narrowly snuck past
Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco). Saint Benedict struck again in the 38th minute with a shot into the goal that was assisted by a corner kick.
Entering the second half down 0-2, Macalester was the first to shoot, with a strike by forward
Lindsay Edmonson (North Kingstown, R.I./LaSalle Academy) in the 57th minute that was blocked by CSB goalkeeper Rhianna Anya. Fifteen minutes later, sophomore midfielder
Nisha Wetter (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century) had the Scots' best opportunity for a goal, though her left-footed shot missed the goal's left side.
Both teams totaled five shots in the second half, though all four of the Scots' shots on goal were blocked by Anya. Goalkeeping duties for Macalester were shared by Heuga, who played the first half and registered three saves, and
Lily Salazar (Oakland, Calif./Bentley Upper School), who played the second, making one save. Saint Benedict's goalkeeper made four saves.
Macalester plays at home next. The Scots will duel Wartburg College Sunday, Oct. 4, at 1:00 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium for a non-conference match.
