DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Macalester College volleyball team played the first of three games at the Loras Tournament on Friday, losing to Wartburg, 25-14, 25-12, 25-23 at the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center. The Scots are now 4-6 on the season, while the Knights improve to 6-5.
The first set was tied, 9-9 before Wartburg closed the set with a 16-5 run to win, 25-14. First year outside hitter
Channing Smith (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) had three kills for Macalester. In the second set, the Knights led from start to finish en route to a 25-12 victory. Smith and first year middle blocker
Kyle Speta (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) each had two kills.
The Scots put things together in the third set, leading by as many as five points. After building a 21-16 advantage, Macalester still led by three, 23-20, before Wartburg tallied the final five points to clinch the set and the match. Junior outside hitter
Adonia Anene (North Hollywood, Calif./The Buckley School) registered four kills in the final set.
Smith recorded seven kills and Anene had six kills in the match, with senior setter
Hannah Morrow (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) delivering 10 assists. Smith and junior libero
Lizzie Joo (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian) each notched eight digs to pace the defense. Wartburg's Ashlynn Hodges had 10 kills to lead all players.
Macalester completes the Loras Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 19 with matches against the host Duhawks at 11:00 a.m. and North Central College at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
