ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team played a tough match with St. Catherine University in the rain, losing 1-0 in the MIAC opener for both teams Wednesday night at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The defeat gives the Scots a 2-3 record overall, while the Wildcats, who are the defending MIAC regular-season champions, improve to 3-2, 1-0 MIAC.
In the 27th minute, Charlotte Willems played a short pass to Henamen in behind the Macalester defense. Henaman placed a shot into the left side of the goal from 10 yards out for a 1-0 lead. In the 34th minute, Macalester had an opportunity to pull even when sophomore midfielder Lilly Staples (Morgantown, W. Va./Morgantown) took a shot from 20 yards out that was headed for the upper right corner before Wildcats' goalkeeper Brianna Valdez made the save.
In the second half, the Scots pressed for the equalizer and put seven shots on goal in the final 45 minutes. With just over a minute to play, senior midfielder Gabriela Carrillo-Quinones (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) took a shot from 15 yards out that was deflected by a defender towards the goal, where Valdez made a diving save. The rebound was eventually cleared to junior midfielder Charlotte Martel (North Andover, Mass./North Andover), who fired a shot from 30 yards out that was saved by Valdez.
Both teams took 12 shots, with Macalester putting nine shots on frame compared to six for the Wildcats. Senior Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) played the first half in goal for the Scots and made two saves, while junior Lily Salazar (Oakland, Calif./Bentley Upper School) played the second half and registered three saves.
The Scots continue MIAC play with a game at St. Scholastica on Saturday, Sept. 19. The game begins at 1:00 p.m. in Duluth, Minn.
