Water Polo: Jess Palmer-Sammons Repeats as CWPA MVP

PAUL, Minn. – Macalester College senior Jess Palmer-Sammons (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) was named the CWPA Most Valuable Player for the second year in a row, as the conference announced its year-end awards today. Palmer-Sammons was included on the ALL-CWPA first team, senior Jayden Kratt (Palo Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn) and first year Reese Winegar (Hoffman Estates, Ill./William Fremd) made the second team, and sophomore Anna Gaisser (Seattle, Wash./Ingraham) received All-CWPA honorable mention.

Palmer-Sammons joins Lucille Moran'19 as Scots who have been named the CWPA Most Valuable Player twice. Moran was the MVP following the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

A three-time All-CWPA first team selection and the 2025 CWPA MVP, Palmer-Sammons leads Macalester with 42 goals and 26 assists for 68 points in 18 games this season. She tallied four goals, including the game-winning goal in sudden death overtime, in a 7-6 victory at Redlands on Mar 21. Palmer-Sammons also tallied four goals against Division I VMI on Feb. 15, against Austin College in a 15-14 victory on Mar. 15 and again in a 20-7 victory over Penn State Behrend on Mar. 27. Also a key component in the Scots' defense, she leads the team with 39 steals. In 74 career matches at Macalester, she has 147 goals and 64 assists for 211 points while receiving All-American honorable mention twice.

Kratt earns her third All-CWPA honor after being named to the first team last year and receiving honorable mention in 2024. Also an honorable mention All-American in 2024, she has played in 13 games this year, registering 122 saves while posting an 8.00 goals against average and a .540 save percentage. Kratt also notched 10 steals and added four assists. She made a season-high 20 saves in the win over Austin and had 14 saves in the Scots' 11-6 victory over Connecticut College in the quarterfinals of the CWPA Championships earlier today.

Winegar stepped into the Scots' lineup and has bolstered the team's offense in her first season. She ranks third on the team with 23 goals, 18 assists and 41 points, and has drawn a team-best 19 ejections. In a 15-10 win over Connecticut College on Mar. 28, Winegar tallied a career-best four goals. She is tied with Palmer-Sammons with 39 steals this season.  

Gaisser receives All-CWPA honorable mention after making the second team a year ago. She ranks second on the team with 27 goals, 23 assists and 50 points, while her 28 steals rank third. Gaisser tallied five goals in a 21-7 victory over Grove City on Feb. 14. She has 59 goals and 32 assists for 91 points in 38 career games.

Augustana College's Braelyn Hill was chosen the CWPA Rookie of the Year, while Ryan Pryoer of Augustana was named the Coach of the Year.

The Scots are at Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., for the CWPA Division III Championship. After beating Connecticut College, the second-seeded Scots will face Grove City in the semifinals on Saturday, April 11 at 12:00 p.m. Central.
