ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's tennis team began its MIAC schedule with a 4-3 loss to Bethel University on Sunday at Hayden Tennis Courts. The defeat, which also came in the Scots' home opener, drops Macalester to 6-6 on the season. The Royals improve to 14-1 overall and 3-0 in the MIAC.
In doubles play, junior
Kangyu Li (Shanghai, China/Shanghai Southwest Weiyu) and first year
Derek Chen (South Kingstown, R.I./Moses Brown School) won their match at No. 2 doubles over Zach Chaffey and Watson Sheard, 6-3. Bethel won the other two matches to earn the doubles point.
In singles, Li and Chen won their matches at third and fourth singles, respectively in straight sets. First year
Charles Flaman (Calgary, Alberta/Rundle College) battled Dylan Magistad at second singles and came away with a tie-breaker victory, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6). The dual came down to the match at No. 1 singles, where senior
Jordan Doi (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani) ultimately fell to Carter Sheard, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.
Macalester continues MIAC play with a home dual against Carleton College on Saturday, April 4. The first matches begin at 2:00 p.m. at Hayden Tennis Courts.
