AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Macalester College baseball team continued its spring trip today with an early-morning game against Amherst College at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex . The Mammoths beat the Scots 20-5. Amherst advances to 5-2 overall on the season and 2-1 in Florida. Macalester slips to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in Florida.
The Mammoths rumbled out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first, followed in the second by a double that sent another three runs across the plate. Another run in the second and another trio in the third gave Amherst a 10-0 lead. The Scots entered the fifth down 11-0. Senior
Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) singled, advanced to second off a base hit from junior
Holden Peacock (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid School), then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Finally, first-year
Jax Minnis (Gilbert, Ariz./Seton Catholic Prep) sent Gumagay home to break the seal for Mac.
Senior
Stephen Paulsen (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and first-year
Ellis Alexander (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) notched two more runs in the sixth and Gumagay batted Minnis and Alexander home in the seventh. However, the Mammoths refused to let up on offense, and a six-run eighth inning was more than enough to put Macalester away. Gumagay finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run in four at-bats. Minnis logged a hit, an RBI and a run of his own in three at-bats.
Mac returns to the diamond tomorrow against Elmhurst University at 12:30 a.m. Eastern on Friday, March 20. It will be the second-to-last game in Florida for the Scots, once again at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale, Fla.
