MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College women's tennis team earned victories at the top four singles positions to down Edgewood University, 4-3 in a non-conference dual Friday night at Baseline Tennis Center. The win is the first of the season for the Scots, who improve to 1-2. The Eagles fall to 11-4.
Macalester opened the dual with seniors
Savannah Haugen (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) and
Elizabeth Trevathan (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) beating Hattie Plenty and Evelyn Taylor at first doubles, 6-4. But Edgewood won the matches at second and third doubles to take the doubles point.
Needing four wins in singles play, the Scots received victories from Haugen, Trevathan and first year
Isabella Tamburrino (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary's Episcopal School) at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles, all in straight sets. With the Eagles taking the matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles in straight sets, the dual came down to the match at No. 4 singles. First year
Darrian Streater (Redmond, Ore./Redmond Proficiency Academy) won the first set, 6-2, and Edgewood's Kaitlyn Narkis won the second, 7-5, forcing a tie-breaker. Streater outlasted Narkis, 10-5 in the tie-breaker to win the match and give Macalester a 4-3 victory.
The Scots face Bethany Lutheran College in a non-conference dual on Saturday, Feb. 21 at Baseline Tennis Center.
