ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team lost a MIAC match with St. Catherine University in four sets Wednesday evening in the Leonard Center. The Scots are now 7-9 on the season and 2-2 in the conference, while the Wildcats improve to 4-13 overall and 2-2 in the MIAC.
Macalester controlled the first set, leading 20-13 and 23-17 before St. Catherine battled back to make the score 24-23. But the Scots clinched the set on a kill by sophomore right side
Danielle Oji (Katy, Texas/Obra D. Tompkins). Oji was one of four Scots to tally four kills in the set. The Wildcats responded in the second set, building a 12-5 lead en route to a 25-15 win. Junior outside hitter
Adonia Anene (North Hollywood, Calif./The Buckley School) had two of Macalester's seven kills.
The third set was close throughout, with the Scots taking a slight 19-17 edge. Three straight points by the Wildcats sparked a 6-1 run that closed out the set, 25-20. Anene put away five kills for Macalester in the set. The fourth set belonged to St. Catherine, which registered six consecutive points to turn a 15-11 edge into a 21-11 bulge. The Scots came as close as 22-14 before the Wildcats ended the match by scoring the final three points.
Anene notched three kills in the final set, giving her a team-best 11 kills for the match. She also added eight digs. Oji finished with six kills, while senior setter
Hannah Morrow (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) contributed 18 assists and 13 digs to lead Macalester. First year middle blockers
Kyle Speta (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) and
Siennah Calkins (Tomahawk, Wis./Tomahawk) each registered three blocks. Alivia Hanover, Maddie Newton and Addison Vandereide tallied 12 kills apiece to lead St. Catherine.
The Scots will play a tri-match at Saint Mary's University on Saturday, Oct. 10, facing the Cardinals at 3:00 p.m. in a MIAC match before taking on Coe College in a non-conference match at 5:00 p.m. in Winona, Minn.
