Men’s Soccer: Scots Down Regional Foe UW-Superior, 2-1

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senior forward Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Macalester men's soccer team past UW-Superior, 2-1 in a non-conference game at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The win improves the Scots to 4-3-3 on the season, while the Yellowjackets, who received votes in the latest Region IX rankings, drop to 8-3-1.

Macalester, who was ranked No. 6 in Region IX, broke a scoreless tie in the 15th minute. First year forward John Albright (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) found Frantz deep in the Yellowjackets' penalty area with a pass that drew goalkeeper Henry Ruhland out of the goal. Frantz centered the ball to sophomore midfielder Milan Shah (Chicago, Ill./Francis W. Parker), who fired a shot into the goal from 10 yards out for a 1-0 lead. Shah now has three goals on the season.

The score remained 1-0 into the second half until a UW-Superior foul in the 51st minute gave Macalester a free kick one yard from the end line and two yards outside of the penalty area on the left side. Senior midfielder Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) drilled the free kick to the near post for Frantz, who redirected the ball with the outside of his foot just inside the left post for his first goal of the season.

The Scots controlled possession for most of the game and prevented the Yellowjackets from creating many scoring chances. But the visitors broke through in the 88th minute, when Adam Kaffel sent a long ball into the Scots' penalty area for Seth Davidson, who headed the ball over senior goalkeeper PJ Pozniak (Phoenixville, Pa./Spring-Ford) and into the net to make the score 2-1. The goal is Davidson's 17th goal of the season, which ranks first in Division III. But it wasn't enough to prevent Macalester from closing out the victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Justin Ratner (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) started and made two saves in the first half. Senior goalkeeper Drew Moseman (St. Paul, Minn./Central) started the second half and registered one save in 32 minutes, while Pozniak played the final 13 minutes. Ruhland finished with four saves, as the Scots held a 6-4 edge in shots on goal.

Macalester resumes MIAC play with a game at Bethel University on Saturday, Oct. 10. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. in Arden Hills, Minn.
