Men's Soccer: Scots Edged by Johnnies, 2-1

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Macalester men's soccer team visited #24 Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minn. for the Scots' fourth MIAC matchup of the season on Saturday, Oct. 3. The Scots put forth a strong effort, with an early goal, but the Johnnies did not stay sleeping, scoring two straight and closing the door on the Scots midway through the second half. The Scots are now 3-3-3 on the season and 2-2 in conference, while the Johnnies improve to 11-1-0 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC.

Macalester's goal came in the fourth minute by way of first-year forward John Albright (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka), scoring off a ball sent into the box with the keeper out of position in the bottom right-hand corner of the goal.
Macalester's lead held until the first half, until St. John's turned on the gas with a goal in the 69th minute followed by another soon after in the 75th minute. The Scots had a few chances in the second half but could not keep the ball under the crossbar.

With rain dumping down on the pitch, the wet field, the game was tense, physical and chippy from both squads. Both teams combined for 21 fouls with the Johnnies tallied three yellow cards on a set of late challenges.

The Scots were outshot 28-8 through the match, with a 12-3 deficit in shots on goal as well. Macalester's keeper Justin Ratner (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) tallied 10 saves in a busy night for Mac's defense. Macalester's squad was led in shots by Senior midfielder Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine), followed by Albright and Ocean Lipscomb (Alpharetta, Ga./Fulton Science Academy) with two of their own.

For their next match, the Scots will host the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Wednesday, Oct. 7 in a non-conference game at 7:30 p.m.
