Women’s Soccer: Scots Edged by Bethel in MIAC Road Match

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team battled back to tie the game before ultimately falling to Bethel University, 2-1 in a MIAC match Sunday afternoon at Royal Stadium. The result leaves the Scots with an overall record of 5-7, including a 3-3 mark in conference play. The Royals improve to 3-6-1, 2-3-1 MIAC.

After surrendering a goal in the 32nd minute by Sarah Motalebi, Macalester responded just four minutes later. Senior forward Adi Nhouyvanisvong (Wayzata, Minn./Minnetonka) took a corner kick from the left side that was headed towards the goal by sophomore midfielder Lilly Staples (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown). Bethel goalkeeper Autumn Maki deflected the ball off the crossbar, but the ball went right to junior forward Erica Hamilton (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter), who knocked in the rebound to tie the score at 1-1. The goal is Hamilton's team-leading fourth of the season.

Twelve minutes into the second half, sophomore midfielder Evelyn Savoie (Northbridge, Mass./Marianopolis Preparatory School) put a shot on goal that was saved by Maki. Then in the 61st minute, Hannah Kvant hit the post with a shot, then scored off the rebound to put Bethel on top, 2-1. In the 71st minute, Staples had a breakaway down the right side an fired a shot off the left post. Sophomore forward Lindsay Edmonson (North Kingstown, R.I./LaSalle Academy) took a shot from distance that Maki saved in the 86th minute. That was the last scoring opportunity for the Scots, who outshot the Royals, 23-8 and put 10 shots on goal. Bethel's only two shots on frame resulted in goals.

Junior goalkeeper Lily Salazar (Oakland, Calif./Bentley Upper School) started and played the first half, while senior Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./ Urban School of San Francisco) played the second half in goal for the Scots. Maki registered nine saves for Bethel.

Macalester hosts Concordia College in a MIAC game on Wednesday, Oct. 14. The match starts at 7:30 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
